Not flowers in the literal sense, but the cycles of growth, decline, resilience and survival that define life in overlooked communities.
Kenmore Maruta (b. 2000, Harare, Zimbabwe) is a contemporary painter whose work explores the social, emotional and psychological landscapes of marginalised urban spaces. Since 2017 he has developed his practice under the mentorship of Misheck Masamvu at Village Unhu, the independent art space in Harare. His oil paintings offer an intimate view of the ghetto and its "flowers", metaphors for the cycles of growth, decline, resilience and survival that define life in overlooked communities, observed from within what he calls his circle: a visual and emotional space shaped by his immediate environment, from which the artist watches himself as a third-person witness. He has exhibited at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, at the Fondation Blachère, France, where he completed a residency in 2025, and at the Investec Cape Town and Joburg art fairs. He lives and works in Harare.
