"I never use one wood for one work. It is like a piano."
Gerald Chukwuma (b. 1973, Lagos, Nigeria) is a sculptor and painter, among the most distinctive heirs of the Nsukka school. A First Class graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2003), he creates monumental panels of carved, burnt and painted wood, studded with upcycled aluminium from cans, phone cards and discarded metal. His visual language weaves the Uli and Nsibidi traditions of Igbo culture into contemporary narratives of migration, memory and cultural documentation. Featured on CNN's Inside Africa (2011) and reviewed in The New York Times (2019), his works are held in the World Bank Art Collection, Washington D.C., the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art, Lagos, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He lives and works in Lagos.
