Spread Over the Ocean Bed: Nirveda Alleck
In Nirveda Alleck's work, what lies submerged is not what has died. It is what keeps on acting without being seen.
Black Liquid Art Gallery presents Spread Over the Ocean Bed, the first solo exhibition in Italy of Nirveda Alleck (Mauritius, 1975), curated by Antonella Pisilli. At its centre is the video Insular Variations II - Arise (2016-2026), shown concurrently at the 2nd International Biennale of Contemporary Art of Durrës, alongside seven paintings made between 2017 and 2024. Beneath the waters of Mauritius lie the traces of Mauritia, an ancient submerged continent. From this invisible presence the whole exhibition takes shape: something can disappear from the surface without ceasing to exist. Alleck looks for what remains beneath an island, beneath an image, beneath the history we have been told, beneath an identity that others would like to define on our behalf.
The opening takes place as part of the 22nd Giornata del Contemporaneo, promoted by AMACI, with free admission from 2 to 8 pm.
