Nirveda Alleck (b. 1975, Mauritius) is one of the leading contemporary artists of the Indian Ocean region, working across painting, photography, video and installation. Trained at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, Cape Town, with an MFA from the Glasgow School of Art, she explores identity, otherness and the negotiation of belonging in a globalised world, from the celebrated "Continuum" series, portraits of people from across the world suspended on white grounds, including the exiled Chagossian community, to the mythological self-inquiry of "Divine Weapons". A laureate of the Dak'Art Biennale (2010) and participant in the Gwangju Biennale (2024) and the 16th Curitiba Biennial (2026), she teaches at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute's School of Fine Arts, advocates for Mauritius's cultural industries, and was elevated to the rank of Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (CSK) in 2019. She lives and works in Mauritius.
