"To represent is already to denounce and condemn the unacceptable."

Bruce Clarke (b. 1959, London) is a visual artist and photographer of South African descent, based in France. Trained in Fine Art at the University of Leeds under professors associated with the Art & Language movement, he has developed a practice rooted in critical figuration, examining contemporary history, its fractures and transmissions, and the stories too often ignored. He is the author of two landmark memorial projects for the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda: the Garden of Memory near Kigali (2000-2021), realised with victims' families and the support of UNESCO, and Upright Men (2014), monumental silhouettes now permanently installed in public spaces from Kigali to Brussels, renewed in 2024 as Upright Women. His works are held in public collections across Europe, Africa and Brazil.
