"With collage, symbols become a language."
Godfried Donkor (b. 1964, Accra, Ghana) is a mixed-media artist living between London and Accra, one of the most authoritative voices on the shared, unequal histories linking Africa, Europe and the Caribbean. Trained at Central Saint Martins, London, at the Escola Massana, Barcelona, and with an MA in African Art History from SOAS, University of London (1995), he is best known for collages layering figures over newspaper pages, lace and sheet music, and for paintings exploring the entangled histories of the transatlantic slave trade and boxing. Winner of the Prix de la Révélation at the Dakar Biennale (1998) and Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow (2023), in 2026 he takes part in the 61st Venice Biennale, "In Minor Keys".
